Communication Skills Program

Communication Skills Program (CSP)

The Communication Skills Program (CSP) is an Elk Island Public Schools’ system program that serves learners in grades 1 through 3 with severe delays in communication skills and/or a severe language-based learning disability.

The primary focus for learners in this program is the development of speech and language skills throughout all activities during the school day. The program offers a small class setting and individualized instruction in Language Arts and Mathematics. Learners participate in the regular curriculum to the fullest extent possible and participate in regular classes as appropriate. By Grade 3, most learners are fully included in regular classes, with support as necessary. Instruction is guided by an Instructional Support Plan (ISP) and builds upon individual strengths and needs.

The focus of the program is on:

  • Early intervention
  • Language acquisition
  • Articulation/phonology acquisition
  • Pro-social skills
  • Specialized language intervention within age appropriate curriculum content
  • Proactive intervention for regular program success
